Drummond Residence

Houston, TX

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey a new kind of typology for residential development in the flood plain is beginning to emerge. Much like the beach house typology that lines the coast which are raised above grade to allow rising tides to pass under, the Drummond house is similarly elevated 8' above the ground to allow flood waters to pass under without compromising the house. Located near a Houston Bayou that is prone to spill its banks at an ever more frequent pace the home owners decided that elevating the entire house would allow them to stay in their neighborhood while offering the peace of mind against future events. The ground plane, liberated from the footprint of the house, becomes an open area for the pool and patio as well as a masonry plinth of parking and storage that grounds the floating dwelling.
