Unagi Sisters

Houston, TX

This pair of houses, challenged by a narrow lot that influenced their long thin shape, were inspired by the similarly challenged townhouses in Kyoto, Japan often referred to as "unagi no nedoko", or eel beds. The entry courtyard penetrates the middle of the house to create an inward facing atrium that brings light and views to the core of the house. A perforated screen wraps the stair to allow the natural light to filter into the vertical circulation space.
