Lagom

This modern house in Houston, Texas, is designed to be resilient in a floodplain while incorporating Scandinavian design elements which reflects the homeowners heritage. The architecture emphasizes simplicity, functionality, and sustainability that respects both the regional climate and the timeless appeal of Scandinavian aesthetics.

Scandinavian design’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to create beautiful, functional, and comfortable living spaces that promote well-being and a strong connection with nature.

The home gets its name from a Swedish word, lagom, meaning “just the right amount”.  Also translated as, in balance, not too little or not too much.

Clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic dominate the exterior. Large, floor to ceiling windows and sliding glass doors provide an abundance of natural light. The facade combines natural materials such as wood and brick, staying true to Scandinavian simplicity. Raised wooden decks and patios extend the living space outdoors.

The interior features an open floor plan to maximize space and natural light. The living, dining, and kitchen areas flow seamlessly, creating a sense of continuity and openness.  The interior finishes are light-hued, natural materials such as rift-cut white oak with a matte finish, stone, and metal accents. Walls are painted in neutral tones, and floors are finished in porcelain tile and wood.  Built-in storage solutions and multi-functional furniture ensure efficient use of space, reflecting the Scandinavian emphasis on practicality.
